Ready to create the home you love ? Just like fashion and music, our sense of style is constantly evolving with the passage of time, age, and trends. And as our personal style changes, so does the style of our homes. A few years ago, I was captivated by the "Japandi" style, a beautiful fusion of Scandinavian and Japanese design. While I haven't completely let go of my love for it, I have recently fallen head over heels for the charm and elegance of English and French provincial homes. There's something about the rich heritage and timeless legacy that resonates deeply with me. As a result, I have carefully incorporated key pieces that reflect this newfound love into my own home, seamlessly blending them in a clutter-free manner. Throughout my career, I have had the pleasure of working with a diverse range of clients, each with their own unique design styles. From the classic elegance of Provincial and Hamptons to the modern vibrancy of African and the rustic charm of English country, I have embraced and brought to life a multitude of design aesthetics. Personally, I know of only a handful ladies who once having children CHOOSE to give up their career for motherhood. Majority of us, seem to struggle as we wade through the guilt of never finding the so widely spoken - balance . THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS BALANCE - ONLY priorities . PLANNERS For the past five years now, my family and I have lived a lifestyle that follows a strict daily, weekly and monthly plan. Listen! No jokes, without a clear plan, the wheels WILL fall off. I know so because I've seen it happen in my own life. ​ It goes without saying that the more members you add to your family the more complex life becomes. Remembering who needs to be dropped off then picked up where at what time, and who is doing groceries and cooking...Lord take the wheel! ​ Because I'm an all round wonderful person, I've left you templates of some of our family planners. I suggest printing an A3 size, laminate it and then use a whiteboard pen instead of permanent marker. Come, take a seat at my table. I like to think of myself as the perfect combination of ghetto and bougie, and so is my cooking. When you come to my home – whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner – it will inevitably be a mix of soul food meets fancy. Cooking brings me soooo much joy! It's my happy place. I pour a glass of wine, take off my shoes, play my best jams – loudly – and I'm off! Where possible, I use good quality ingredients because I appreciate the difference they make to every meal. But, above all, I cook from my soul - tasting as I go and trusting my gut instict. On this site, you'll find a bunch of free recipes. You can also buy a copy of my book, which I wrote during one of the many COVID lockdowns in Melbourne! Whichever way you go, I encourage you to use my recipes as a guide rather than a set of rules. While I may have included specific quantities, I don't know you and your preferences. I don't know when something is too sweet or too salty for you. (My darling husband still adds salt to every meal I cook - how rude!!) So, trust yourself, have fun, and make sure to take time to appreciate the results. My name is Dawn Mackay and I am the Founder & Principal Designer at Sanctuary Ekhaya and Sanctuary Table. Using the principle of service to others (and self ), I spend most of my days juggling motherhood - school pick ups, cooking meals, listening to random stories, wiping bottoms, helping my husband find items right in front of him - and running my business where I create content, products and services to inspire, encourage and support the 21st century woman. For as long as I can remember, I've loved the experience of entering a beautiful home - not just the way it looks but how it makes you feel. Maybe it's because I grew up without much money and lived in places where violence or the threat of violence was often present. I swore that one day I would create a beautiful home for my family and, for the past 15 years, I've been doing just that. ​ Even when my husband and I were brokety-broke, I worked with what we had, repurposing and recycling old pieces of furniture. Over time, our bank balance has increased, and so has my knowledge of what it means to design and style spaces that meet both your physical and emotional needs. One thing has stayed the same: I believe everyone deserves to live in a home that makes them feel safe, warm and loved, and creating that home shouldn't cost the earth. That's why I developed sanctuary ekhaya: sanctuary - a sacred space; a safe haven; a place of refuge and protection. ekhaya ("eh-kai-uh") - from my mother tongue, isiZulu, meaning "home". sanctuary ekhaya exists to help turn your home into a sanctuary - a place you and your family can't wait to come back to. And, whether you own your house or rent, there are so many creative and affordable ways to do so.
